Whitby is changing.
Come and see for yourself…
Discover… the natural beauty that has
earned Whitby the title ‘jewel in the
Yorkshire coast crown’. Whitby has the
perfect mix of landscape, attractions,
facilities, charm and atmosphere.
At the mouth of the Esk Valley, Whitby
is a bustling fishing port and thriving holiday resort.
Flanked by the imposing Abbey ruins on one cliff and the famous
Whitby whalebones and Captain Cook statue on the other, Whitby’s
harbour and beaches have been attracting visitors for generations.
What awaits all these visitors – holidaymakers, mariners, walkers
and explorers alike – is a resort with something for everyone.
Holidaymakers
Enjoy… the long, West Cliff beach with its soft, gently shelving
sands, a magnet for families and walkers. In Whitby itself there is
plenty to see and do. Traditional amusements and attractions sit on
the West Cliff and by the harbourside. No visit is complete without a
visit to one of Whitby’s famous fish and chips cafes!
Move just a few yards away and the atmosphere changes as you
reach parades of stylish bars, cafes and restaurants leading to
streets full of shops, many unique to Whitby. Some stock the
famous Whitby jet jewellery. These tempting shops and attractions
fill both sides of the river, split by the iconic swing bridge, an
attraction in its own right.
For some peace and quiet, Whitby has lots of parks and gardens
and for something a little different why not try a trip out to sea for a
fresh perspective on this beautiful resort.
Enchanted by what you have found you’ll want to stay longer and
Whitby has a fantastic range of accommodation on offer – from
comfortable and welcoming bed & breakfasts; luxury guest houses
and elegant hotels to the best equipped apartments and cottages.
Mariners
Appreciate… the care that is being put in to welcoming visitors
who come by sea. The traditional appeal of Whitby’s beaches and
harbour has been joined by that of the town’s marina, a modern
facility that lures pleasurecraft from home and abroad. Yacht
visitors find a beautiful harbour and plenty of cafes, bars,
restaurants, shops and a fabulous selection of accommodation to
suit their needs. Whitby is probably unmatched as a ‘mariner’s rest’
and a bolthole for discovering this part of the country.
Walkers
Savour… enough natural beauty and charm to inspire literary
greats – from Bram Stoker to Dickens and Tennyson, not to
mention artists and photographers. Whitby is a walker’s paradise
and a key stop-off point on the famous 107-mile Cleveland Way.
There is plenty to explore in and around the town and Whitby is a
fantastic base for exploring the breathtaking landscape of the North
York Moors, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.
Go inland to discover the unspoilt charms of villages like Goathland
– backdrop for the world-famous Heartbeat television series and
Grosmont, terminus for the superb North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Head to the coast and you can explore from Staithes, Runswick Bay
and Sandsend to the north down to Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar
and beyond to Scarborough and Filey to the south.
